Mercedes-Benz has canceled production of nearly every V8 engine destined for one of its 2022 model year cars in the U.S. But the move isn’t part of the automaker’s push into electric cars. It’s a response to supplier problems.
The news first surfaced over the weekend in a Reddit thread but has since been partially confirmed by Mercedes-Benz.
A Reddit user posted a memo from Mercedes-Benz to its U.S. dealership network explaining that supply problems would force the cancelation of most U.S.-bound V8s for the 2022 model year. An attached list of affected vehicles included:
- AMG C 63 S Coupe
- AMG C 63 S Cabriolet
- AMG GLC 63 S Coupe
- AMG GLC 63 SUV
- AMG GLC 63 S SUV
- AMG E 63 S
- AMG E 63 S Wagon
- AMG GT 63
- AMG GT 63 S
- GLE 580 4MATIC
- GLS 580 4MATIC
- AMG GLE 63 S SUV
- AMG GLE 63 S Coupe
- AMG GLE 63 SUV
- Maybach GLS 600 4MATIC
- G 550
- AMG G63
A Mercedes spokesperson did not confirm or deny the specific list.
Many of the affected models are available in other configurations without a V8 engine.
But, in a statement, the company says it has “prioritized focus to comply with various global, external and internal requirements, as well as several other factors, including but not limited to challenges in the supply chain, have an impact on the offering of the product portfolio in various markets. Mercedes-Benz is exploring every opportunity to solve the challenges at hand as soon as possible.”
But the company has apparently concluded that it won’t solve them in time for the 2022 model year.
