Over 419,000 Jeep Grand Cherokee models, including the 2022-2026 Grand Cherokee and the 2023-2025 Grand Cherokee L, are being recalled due to a potential issue with their side airbags.
According to a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), some of these models may have been built with Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) modules containing faulty software. This software keeps the airbag pressure sensors on the door active. A faulty door pressure sensor could delay side airbag deployment. If the side airbag doesn’t deploy correctly, there’s a higher risk of injury in a crash.
Warning signs include continuous illumination of the airbag light in the cluster and a chime sounding at each ignition cycle. To remedy the issue, the ORC software will be updated.
Millions of cars are recalled, sometimes more than once. While automakers do their best to notify every vehicle owner affected by a recall, they don’t always reach everyone.
