Jeep Cherokee SUVs Recalled Over Power Transfer Unit

The 2023 Jeep Cherokee seen off-roading

Jeep has announced a recall of 61,711 Cherokee compact SUVs from model years 2019 to 2023. These vehicles may have been built with a two-speed power transfer unit (PTU) that may fail.

Jeep explains in its recall report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that an internally failed PTU “can cause an unexpected and unrecoverable loss of motive power at any speed or rolling in park.”

A remedy is currently under development.

Drivers should look out for a “Service 4WD” message, noise, vibration, or a change in drive quality. So far, one accident and one injury are possibly related to this issue, according to the NHTSA filing.

Millions of cars are recalled, sometimes more than once. While automakers do their best to notify every vehicle owner affected by a recall, they may not reach everyone.
