Hyundai has issued a recall for 47,749 Kona SUVs due to a defective rear seat belt. The following models are affected:
- 2026 Hyundai Kona
- 2025 Hyundai Kona Electric
In a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) report, Hyundai states the middle rear seat belt buckle assembly was manufactured improperly. The supplier’s stamping die was not properly maintained, resulting in wear from overuse that produced faulty buckle assemblies.
This issue could affect the seat belt’s performance during a crash, increasing the risk of injury to passengers. There are no confirmed incidents or injuries due to this condition in the U.S., according to the NHTSA filing.
To fix this problem, Hyundai dealerships will replace the rear center seat belt. As with all recall repairs, the fix is free.
Hyundai advises those affected by this recall to avoid using the rear center seat until they are able to get their vehicle serviced.
Owners will be notified via mail by Sept. 11, with further instructions for servicing.
