Hyundai Recalls Hydrogen Cars Over Fuel Leak

2022 Hyundai NEXO

Hyundai has recalled 1,545 models of its Nexo hydrogen fuel cell vehicle from model years 2019 through 2024 because they can leak flammable hydrogen gas.

The company tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that the cars use a pressure relief device to vent gas into a glass bulb if the tank overheats. That bulb, however, “could prematurely fracture due to microcracks in the glass, which could lead to inadvertent discharge of hydrogen gas during normal vehicle operation.”

If it happens, Hyundai says, drivers will likely know. “During the event, a loud wind-rushing noise can be heard accompanied by a white fog-like cloud near the rear of the vehicle. Additionally, the fuel gauge will quickly lower, and the malfunction indicator lamp will illuminate in the cluster.”

Dealers will replace the glass bulb with a metal safety device to fix it. In the meantime, Hyundai says, “Owners can continue driving these vehicles; however, Hyundai recommends parking their vehicles outside and away from structures” until dealers fix them.
