Honda Revives Civic Hybrid for 2025

When Honda last redesigned its popular Civic compact car for the 2022 model year, it did something curious – it did not create a hybrid version. As automakers push into electric vehicles, hybrids have outsold them. The quintessential compact car, the Civic had offered a hybrid option for more than 20 years when the gas-electric model disappeared.

But it’s coming back.

The company announced yesterday that the Civic Hybrid would return for the 2025 model year “in both sedan and hatchback variations, advancing its electrification strategy through products and a hybrid-electric system made in North America.”

Honda will build sedan versions in Canada and hatchback versions in the U.S.

The company hasn’t released specifications but says it will use the same 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine found in the current Civic, combined with two electric motors. That’s the same setup used on the European version of the Civic. There, it makes 181 horsepower combined. We’ll likely see that same number here.

Honda expects more than 40% of Civic buyers to choose the hybrid option.
