But Honda fans and car critics were surprised by one thing it didn’t offer – a hybrid drivetrain.
It’s coming, the company says.
In a briefing for reporters this week, Honda officials said a Civic Hybrid will appear in 2024.
Honda will sell hybrid editions of both the Civic sedan and hatchback, the company said. It will use a dual-motor setup similar to the current Honda CR-V Hybrid, which likely means a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine and an electric motor both sending their power to the front wheels.
That would leave the Toyota Corolla Hybrid with an edge – all-wheel-drive – in the minds of some buyers. And its 2024 arrival doesn’t do much good for buyers who need a car this year. But it closes a hole in the Honda lineup – since the automaker canceled its Insight hybrid last year, it has lacked an affordable model more efficient than a simple gasoline-powered car to offer loyalists.
Mamadou Diallo, vice president of auto sales for Honda and Acura, also confirmed that the Honda Ridgeline midsize pickup truck will get an off-road TrailSport variant, though he didn’t put a date on its arrival.
