Aiming to cut down on distracted driving while allowing iPhone owners to make even better use of Apple’s multi-talented voice-activated virtual helper, the 2013 Honda Accord and Acura RDX and ILX models will be offered with Siri operating in the "Eyes Free" mode. This enhancement will become available later in the year as a dealer-installed option. To accommodate this upgrade — which will require an iPhone running the latest iOS 6 operating system — Honda reengineered the software in these vehicles to seamlessly integrate Siri Eyes Free mode into the existing Bluetooth HandsFreeLink via the onboard microphone and speakers.

Activated by pressing and holding the "Talk" button on the vehicle’s multifunction steering wheel, Siri Eyes Free will swing into action and allow the driver to dictate text and e-mail messages as well as set up calendar entries/reminders. Siri can also read incoming text messages, play music via Bluetooth, provide weather updates and more. "iPhone has become so integral to people’s lives that they continue to use them in their vehicles," said Vicki Poponi, assistant vice president of automobile product planning, American Honda. "Offering Honda and Acura owners Siri and its Eyes Free mode via Bluetooth is an incredible opportunity to provide next-generation connectivity and meet our customer’s ever-changing needs."
No word yet on what dealers will be charging for the Siri Eyes Free upgrade. However, you can expect this feature to be offered on even more models in each of Honda’s and Acura’s divisional lineups during the months ahead.
