GMC Reveals the 2027 Sierra 1500

The Sierra 1500 is not only GMC’s best-selling vehicle, but is also the flagship model that best reflects what the brand is about. The philosophy, as the GMC team explained, is “capability without compromise.” In the case of the 2027 Sierra, that means excellent off-road ability and impressive towing and payload capacity, plus the most luxurious interiors to date. While GMC didn’t announce specifications, the new Sierra is poised to deliver more power, capability, and more luxury when it goes on sale in late 2026.

More Power

Two new engines join the Sierra lineup for 2027. A 5.7-liter V8 replaces the 355-horsepower 5.3-liter, and a 6.6-liter replaces the 420-hp 6.2-liter V8. An “enhanced” version of the 2.7-liter 4-cylinder TurboMax is returning, as is the 3.0-liter Duramax diesel. A 10-speed automatic transmission will back all four engines. The new V8 engines, part of GM’s sixth generation of small-block V8s, are designed to deliver more power and efficiency, with improved refinement over the previous generation.

New Style

The 2027 Sierra’s styling is more upscale and sophisticated, as if it’s donning a finely tailored suit. The truck has crisp lines and a sharp new grille and headlight setup. The headlights and taillights are available with “welcome and farewell animations,” and a 4-outlet exhaust is available. The Sierra will still be available with three cab configurations and multiple bed lengths, with rear-wheel drive (RWD) or 4-wheel drive (4WD).

The cabin is where the real transformation lies. Every trim level has a redesigned interior, with its own color scheme. The materials used in the cab have been upgraded, including real wood trim – open-pore forged birch, in the case of the Denali Ultimate – and real carbon fiber in the AT4X. A panoramic sunroof is available, as is 16-speaker Bose audio with speakers mounted in the front-seat headrests.

Screen Time

In addition, there are up to 60 inches of digital displays. There’s the 16.3-inch infotainment screen. This powered screen extends from the dash, making it easier to use and revealing a handy storage area. Then there’s the configurable 12.2-inch driver information center, the 15-inch color head-up display, and the 8.5-inch rear camera mirror. Finally, there is a new 11.5-inch front passenger screen. It has a folding cover that shields about two-thirds of the screen. These can all be found in the Denali Ultimate. (Side note: the Denali Ultimate will come standard with the 6.6-liter V8, as well as a 3-year subscription for Super Cruise.) GMC has not announced which of these features will be available in which trims in the rest of the lineup.

The new MultiPro center console is a multipurpose center console that can be reconfigured to serve as a workstation. It has chargers for your devices and a flat surface for a laptop.

More Capable Off-Road

The AT4X trim level will have front and rear e-lockers (electronic locking differentials). It rides on 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires, and the updated off-road-optimized suspension now adds jounce control dampers.

In addition, the AT4X trim level features a 2-inch suspension lift and its own front fascia and hood design. Inside, the color scheme (“colorway”) is Timber Mahogany. The front seats have extra bolstering, and the AT4X comes with a sport flat-bottom steering wheel. GMC has also confirmed that the AEV Edition package will return for 2027.

Simplified Lineup

For 2027, the SLE and SLT trims are gone. That leaves the Pro, Elevation, AT4, Denali, AT4X, and Denali Ultimate. Pricing will be announced closer to the on-sale date, but we expect pricing to start a touch higher than the current starting price of $40,895 (including destination charge).
