As part of a strategic change aimed at consolidating the automaker’s powertrain engineering sites, General Motors has announced plans to relocate its Performance Build Center from Wixom, Michigan, to the Corvette assembly plant in Bowling Green, Tennessee. The transfer is being covered by a $3.5 million investment and is slated for the first quarter of 2014. The Performance Build Center had been the source point for engines in the 2013 Corvette, including the 430-horsepower/6.2-liter LS3 V8 in the Grand Sport Coupe with manual transmission, the 505-horse/7.0-liter LS7 V8 used in the Z06 and the supercharged 638-horsepower/6.2-liter LS9 in the ZR1. It also is the facility where Corvette buyers could come to personally assemble the engine that would be fitted to their individual vehicles.

While the all-new 2014 Corvette Stingray will go on sale during the third quarter of this year, Chevy has yet to announce which engines buyers of this all-new "C7" generation will be able to assemble at the new Performance Build Center adjunct and exactly when that program will re-commence.

Bringing the Performance Build Center here simply adds to the thrill of purchasing a Corvette and increases satisfaction for our customers and employees."
