With all-wheel drive now fitted as standard, the 2022 Mazda CX-9 has all-season grip to match its athletic demeanor. Starting at $35,630, this 3-row midsize SUV has a reputation for fun-loving handling and a level of agility that’s rare in a vehicle that happens to have room for six or seven people onboard.
While entry-level and mid-range trims already feel a cut above many rivals in terms of their performance and cabin quality, the CX-9 Signature – the highest of six available trims – has the gravitas of a true luxury vehicle.

Standard All-Wheel Drive
Once an option, all-wheel drive is now standard on every 2022 Mazda CX-9. In fact, all Mazda SUVs now sold in the U.S. come with all-wheel drive. The system in the CX-9 is quick to react to slippery road conditions and works in conjunction with what Mazda calls G-Vectoring Control Plus.
Based on the driver’s steering input, it subtly adjusts engine power and uses tiny braking inputs to help the CX-9 better zip around corners with complete confidence. It’s part of the reason this family-friendly SUV feels as though it has the soul of a sports car.
Turbocharged 4-Cylinder Engine
There is only one choice of engine across the entire CX-9 range, but it’s a peach of a powertrain. Under the hood is a 227-horsepower turbocharged 2.5-liter 4-cylinder that’s paired to a quick-witted 6-speed automatic transmission. Put premium fuel in the tank and power jumps to an even 250 horsepower. Smooth and seamless in how it gets the CX-9 down the road, this turbo-4 also returns a solid 20 mpg in city driving and 26 mpg on the highway.
All the Tech Touches
Since it sits at the very top of the CX-9 family tree, the Signature is fitted with every available tech item. This includes a 10.25-inch infotainment screen — controlled via a rotary dial and buttons on the center console — plus Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, navigation, satellite radio, wireless smartphone charging, onboard Wi-Fi hot spot, a 12-speaker Bose audio system, and a total of six USB ports.
Leather Seating and Space for Six People
The CX-9 Signature gets its own upscale quilted Nappa leather seating that’s offered in two color choices — Chestnut or Parchment. To keep you cool or toasty, the front seats are heated and ventilated, the second row is heated, and the steering wheel has a heating function, too.
Overall passenger count goes from seven to six because the CX-9 Signature comes with dual second-row captain’s chairs, versus the standard bench seat. The Signature also adds a second-row center console and is outfitted with wood trim throughout the cabin.
Safety Features Galore
Similar to the Signature’s impressive roster of tech items, it’s important to note this trim comes with all the active safety features offered on the CX-9. To name a few, these include automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, a surround-view parking camera, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, lane-keep assist, and much more.
Bigger Wheels and a Bolder Grille
The CX-9 Signature is fitted with a set of handsome 20-inch multispoke alloy wheels. Another visual clue this happens to be the most luxurious of all CX-9s is the front grille. It features a titanium metallic finish, rather than the black or silver-effect designs used on other trims.
