Ford is asking owners of 2021 Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator full-size SUVs to park outdoors away from structures until the automaker has time to repair a defect that could lead to a vehicle fire.
In recall paperwork filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Ford explains, “An engine compartment fire may occur while driving or parked, even with the ignition in the ‘Off’ position.”
Ford does not know why. The company tells NHTSA it “is currently investigating the cause of this condition.”
“We are working around the clock to determine the root cause of this issue and subsequent remedy so that customers can continue to enjoy using their vehicles,” says Jeffrey Marentic, general manager of Ford passenger vehicles.
Ford is aware of at least eight fires. In at least six of the claims, it says, the fire originated in the engine compartment on the passenger’s side. All eight vehicles were built between Dec. 1, 2020, and April 30, 2021.
With no explanation for the fires, Ford is not yet able to provide a remedy. For now, it plans to send letters to owners explaining the issue. The letter promises Ford will contact them as soon as a remedy is available.
