Ford has issued a recall alert for more than 330,000 Mustangs from model years 2015-2017 because their backup cameras can fail.
The recall covers two separate issues. A wiring harness that powers the rearview camera passes through a rigid tube in the trunk lid. Over time, opening and closing of the trunk can cause the tube to wear away at the wires. This could cause a weak signal, and eventually, no power to the camera.
Separately, connections on the circuit board inside the camera itself may be improperly soldered. They can come loose through repeated opening and closing of the trunk.
Both issues can cause a distorted image, a dim picture, or a complete failure of the camera.
Dealers will inspect the camera and wiring assembly, and replace the wiring harness, camera, or both. Ford has sent dealers newly designed replacement parts that should prevent the problems from recurring.
