Ford Recalls Focus, Escape, and MKC Over Engine Block Heater

Ford has recalled 116,672 vehicles due to issues with an engine block heater installed on 2.0-liter engines. The block heater may overheat and develop a coolant leak through its element pins, resulting in a resistive short.

This recall affects 2013-2018 Ford Focus, 2015-2016 Lincoln MKC, and 2013-2019 Ford Escape models.

Ford says, “A short circuit in the engine block heater increases the risk of an under-hood fire. The risk is increased when the block heater is plugged into a 110-volt electrical supply without a functional circuit breaker or Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) power outlet. This risk only exists when the block heater is plugged in.”

Warning signs include coolant spots on driveways or garage floors, loss of cabin heat, powertrain unit overheating, or a low coolant level warning indicator. Odor or smoke from heat damage is another sign to look out for.

Ford is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this issue. The recalled engine block heater will be replaced free of charge.
