Ford has issued a recall for 272,645 vehicles because they could roll away when parked.
Recalled models include some, but not all, examples of the:
- 2022-2026 Ford F-150 Lightning
- 2024-2026 Ford Mustang Mach-E
- 2025-2026 Ford Maverick
The company tells federal safety officials that a parking pawl may not fully engage when drivers shift the transmission into Park mode, leaving the vehicles able to move. The electronic parking brake prevents movement, and should set itself, but Ford warns that a fault could prevent the brake from applying.
The company is not aware of the phenomenon happening in a customer’s car, but observed it in internal testing.
Dealers will update software to fix the problem. Some of the vehicles can download software updates over the air, but owners will need to bring others to the dealership to receive the patch.
By law, dealers never charge for recall repairs.
Automakers recall many cars to fix safety defects, sometimes more than once. While automakers try to reach every owner to ask them to bring the vehicle in for repair, they rarely get them all. Millions of vehicles on American roads need free recall repairs. To find out if your car is one of them, check the easy VIN tool at our recall center.
