Ford Introduces Supercharged Mustang Dark Horse SC

  • Ford revealed a new version of the Mustang, the Dark Horse SC, with some equipment from the rare, high-performance Mustang GTD.

The king of the Ford Mustang stable is the extraordinary Mustang GTD – essentially a street-legal race car with a price you have to contact Ford to learn (it’s over $300,000). Boasting over 800 horsepower, it’s out of reach for many Mustang fans.

The closest mortals can come is the Mustang Dark Horse. With a 500-hp 5.0-liter Coyote V8 and a $66,770 starting price (including destination and acquisition fees), it’s more realistic for some shoppers.

Soon, though, you may be able to get some of the GTD’s magic.

Ford today revealed a new trim level for the Mustang that drops the GTD’s 5.2-liter supercharged V8 into the Dark Horse platform. The company hasn’t revealed pricing, but says the SC will sit “between the Mustang Dark Horse Performance Package and the Mustang GTD.”

Ford hasn’t revealed a power figure for the SC. We assume it’s at least slightly detuned, as it seems to lack the 8-speed dual-clutch transaxle of the GTD. A more pedestrian 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox takes its place.

It also gets a new aluminum hood with a removable vent tray to improve cooling on track days, a revised front fascia, and underbody venting to enhance aerodynamics. Inside, a leather-wrapped flat-bottom steering wheel, grippy Alcantara seating surfaces, and carbon fiber trim set it apart from other Mustangs.

An optional Track Package strips 150 pounds from the car, thanks to a magnesium strut tower, carbon fiber wheels, and other weight-reduction tricks. A carbon fiber wing, Ford says, helps produce 620 pounds of downforce at 180 mph.

We’ll bring pricing when Ford has more to reveal.
