Ford yesterday announced plans for an electric model of its popular Explorer SUV and strongly hinted at several other possible electric vehicles (EVs). They include a battery version of the Bronco off-road SUV and possibly the Transit Connect cargo van and Ranger pickup.
The news came as part of a presentation for investors about its plans. Executives told investors they expect 40% of Ford’s annual sales to consist of EVs by 2030.
Speakers appeared in front of neon blue outlines of several vehicles projected above battery-electric platforms. One was a boxy SUV with a rear-mounted spare tire – almost certainly the Bronco. Others appeared shaped like the Ranger and Transit Connect.
Ford North American Product Communications Manager Mike Levine later tweeted, “Yes, we will fully electrify Explorer as you might expect.”
Levine also said Ford would “electrify our icons in high-volume segments that we dominate today.”
The company already sells the Mustang Mach-E electric crossover – a critical success and winner of the 2021 North American Utility Vehicle of the Year award. The automaker recently began taking orders for the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning, an all-electric version of its popular full-size pickup.
