First Drive Video: 2024 Ford Mustang

The Ford Mustang wasn’t the first gas-powered muscle car. But it will be the last, as Dodge has retired the Challenger (grab one before next Monday, or they’re gone), and Chevy has announced the end for the Camaro.
Ford isn’t just soldiering on with the Mustang. They’ve created a new one. Our Mike Danger was one of the first people outside Ford to get some time behind the wheel of the seventh-generation 2024 Ford Mustang.
His report? The interior has “that cockpit type of vibe,” and crisp graphics on the big screens (courtesy of the Unreal Engine behind many popular video games) are unusually versatile. Unfortunately, climate controls are in the touchscreen, he says. He likes the look, which is derived from the previous generation but different for each drivetrain configuration, as a subtle signal to those in the know.
But you don’t care about aesthetics, do you?

The Drift Stick Works on The Track

Danger didn’t have a lot of experience drifting, which made him perfect for testing out the drift brake – designed to make it easy for anyone to drift. He was able to have fun and drift around corners without hitting a set of cones.

Even in the tamer EcoBoost version, it was “painfully quick,” with “not a lot of body roll” on an autocross course.

Easy-Driving Around Town

On the road where most people will spend most of their time, the closest he could come to a complaint was that the steering was a bit lighter than he’d like. Switching it to Sport mode helped, but he’d prefer a bit more weight.

The V8-powered GT was what you’d expect – more powerful, louder, and more fun because of those factors. It’s also the only one available with a manual transmission.

The Mustang EcoBoost starts at just under $31,000, with the GT starting at almost $42,500. Convertible models are available.

The Sole Survivor

“Cars like this aren’t going to be around for long,” Danger says, so if you’ve always dreamed of a big American muscle car, “you should check out the Mustang.”
