Dodge Will Build More 2021 Durango SRT Hellcats

Dodge has a problem. When it announced the 2021 Durango HRT Hellcat, it planned to build just 2,000 examples of the 710-horsepower, high-performance SUV with the 3.5-second 0-to-60 mph time. But more than 2,000 people wanted one. That initial run sold out in just three months, and dealers found themselves with more than 2,000 interested customers.

But the company couldn’t easily build more than planned. The production line dedicated to the Durango HRT is about to begin building the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Even if Dodge could find a place to build more Durango Hellcats, emissions regulations that kick in for the 2022 model year would prevent it from building them after 2021.

But the company has found a way to build a few more.

“Any time you launch a limited-production vehicle and plan to build fewer units than the number of Dodge dealers across the country, you risk leaving a lot of customers very unhappy. As we finalized the production plan for this amazing SUV, we found a way to move some 6.2-liter Hemi Hellcat V8 engines from other vehicles to ensure every sold order in our systems will get built,” Dodge Brand Director Bob Broderdorf told reporters.

We don’t know how many additional Durango Hellcats Dodge will be able to build. Dealers will not be reopening the order books. But everyone who lined up in the first place will get their Durango Hellcat.

In the 2022 model year, the 6.2-liter Hellcat V8 will still be available in certain Dodge Charger and Challenger models.
