- Chevrolet will bring back its inexpensive Bolt electric vehicle soon
- The reborn Bolt looks like a mild update of the old one, not a new design
General Motors is now America’s second-best-selling electric vehicle (EV) brand. But its best-selling EV is off the market.
That won’t last long. The Chevy Bolt will be back soon, looking pretty much like it did when it vanished after the 2023 model year.
Chevrolet teased the return of the Bolt today with a series of Instagram photos. None show the whole car, but they show enough to let shoppers know that the next Bolt will look like a mildly updated redesign. It has more in common with the Bolt that Chevrolet retired than with newer GM EV designs like the Chevrolet Equinox EV.
Chevrolet says the Bolt will return as a 2027 model.
The silhouette appears largely the same as the Bolt EUV, the larger of two hatchbacks sold under the Bolt name. However, the photos show new wheels, a revised front fascia and rear lights, and a Tesla-style North American Charging System (NACS) port that will let it use Tesla Superchargers.
New Battery Tech
- The Bolt will likely be the first GM EV with a cheaper lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery
GM CEO Mary Barra, in remarks to investors, has hinted that the next-generation Bolt could carry lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, a battery technology relatively new to the U.S. market. Currently found in some Tesla Model 3 and Model Y EVs, LFP batteries offer slightly reduced range but lower prices than the lithium-ion batteries found in other GM EVs.
We’ll bring more information as it comes.
