Checked Your Tire Pressure Lately? Spate of Tire Recalls This Month

It’s not unusual for a car’s tires to lose pressure with the change of seasons. But if you find yourself topping off the air more than usual lately, there could be a good reason. The month of March has seen several major tire recalls.

Continental has recalled about 94,000 tires wearing the Continental, General, and Barum brands because of a manufacturing defect. The consequences of the defect could be as simple as slow air loss or as severe as a blowout at highway speed.

The tires are original equipment on new cars from Acura, Audi, BMW, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, Fiat, GMC, Honda, Jeep, Lexus, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Infiniti, Ram, Subaru, Toyota, and Volkswagen. Owners with these vehicles will receive notification to arrange for a free replacement.

The recall also extends to replacement tires. In that case, Continental will contact owners who bought the tires, but the company may not have accurate contact information for every owner. Consumers seeking more information, including instructions for identifying affected tires and obtaining replacement tires, are asked to visit Continental’s website for more information.

Cooper Tire Recall

Cooper Tire and Rubber Company is also recalling about 430,000 tires over the risk of a bulge or separation in the sidewall that could lead to tire failure.

Recalled tires include those selling under the Discoverer, Evolution, Courser, Deegan, Adventurer, Hercules, Back Country, Multi-Mile Wild Country, and Big O brands in 18- and 20-inch sizes. These tires date from Feb. 1, 2018, through Dec. 1, 2019. Many sold as replacement tires through Les Schwab, Pep Boys, and Tire Kingdom.

The company will contact owners later this month to arrange a free replacement. Owners can find more information on Cooper’s website.

Many cars are subject to a recall at some point in their lives. By law, manufacturers reach out to owners by mail to notify them of recalls. However, they don’t necessarily have accurate addresses for everyone. Our recall center can tell you whether your car has ever been recalled. Recall repairs are always free.
