UPDATE: You can now read our full review of the 2018 BMW X2
First shown as Concept X2 at the 2016 Paris Auto Show, the production version of the BMW X2 “Sports Activity Coupe” has been teased in images taken during testing in Germany on what’s called by the automaker as “an exploration trip into its future environment – the urban jungle.”

Beneath its high-tech digitally rendered camouflage, the latest version of the subcompact X2 appears to retain most of the basic styling cues seen on the one-off show vehicle–although some of the more aggressive detailing on the front and rear fascia treatments has been toned down. While the large dual-panel sunroof is retained, the X2’s greenhouse has a more conventional shape. Also, the sweep of its roofline looks to have been tweaked to improve rear-seat headroom.

Although BMW provided no other details on the X2, it will be based on the same UKL platform that underpins the BMW X1 as well as the new Mini Countryman. Expect the X2 to share a good deal of the X1’s 4-cylinder powertrain choices and feature standard front-drive and optional xDrive AWD. There are rumors an M version of the X2 also could appear at some point. The new BMW X2 is set to debut later this year. While the automaker has confirmed we will see it in America, there’s still no word yet as to exactly when the X2 will hit showrooms here.
