BMW, Toyota Issue Recall, Park Outside Warning for 196,000

BMW and Toyota recalled 196,355 vehicles due to a fire risk. The companies warn owners to park their cars outside, away from structures, until dealers have made critical repairs.

BMW manufactures the Supra for Toyota.

The companies tell federal safety regulators that water can reach an electrical relay in the cars’ engine starters. Over time, that can lead to corrosion. Corrosion can cause the starter to fail or lead to a short circuit, resulting in overheating.

“In an extreme case, this could cause a thermal event during vehicle operation or when the vehicle is parked and the ignition is off,” the companies say.

BMW says it has received several field reports of the problem, but knows of no related injuries or accidents.

Dealers will replace the engine starter with a redesigned part to fix the issue.
