BMW is recalling 318,495 newer cars and SUVs due to an increased risk of engine fire, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) disclosed recently.
The engine starter may malfunction due to “unexpected wear,” which could lead to the engine not starting or a fire happening on start-up or during operation.
The recall marks an expansion of a recall issued in February, which was the second recall filed by BMW about the issue, the first coming in October 2025. Neither fix resolved the problem.
The sweeping recall encompasses nine BMW models and the Toyota Supra, and covers the 2021 to 2026 model years. The expanded recall represents more model years, and includes BMW vehicles built between Dec. 14, 2020, and April 30, 2025.
Of the extensive recall, only 270 Supras were recalled. The Toyota Supra coupe and BMW Z4 roadster were jointly developed by Toyota and BMW.

BMW said it was not aware of any crashes or injuries related to the recall. After being notified, owners should take their vehicle to a dealer, which will install a new starter with a different design at no cost.
As with all recalls, dealers will replace or fix the faulty part, free of charge. Owners can expect notification by mail by Aug. 28. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or Toyota’s customer service at 1-800-331-4331.
