BMW and Daimler team on wireless EV charging

BMW Group and Daimler — parent company of Mercedes-Benz — have announced plans to jointly develop and implement a standardized wireless inductive charging system for use by pure electric-powered vehicles and plug-in hybrids. This new wireless setup will be evaluated using the BMW i3 and i8 as well as on the upcoming Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-in Hybrid starting this fall.

As in other inductive charging systems, the BMW/Daimler design utilizes a primary coil in a plate mounted on the garage floor and a secondary coil located in the floor of the vehicle. Once the driver properly positioned the car using an in-car display, a push of a button activates the charging process via a Wi-Fi communications link between the two coils. The battery replenishment process takes place at 3.6kW per hour pace (which is comparable to current Level 2 240-volt recharging) with over 90 percent efficiency, but the automakers foresee the possibility of upping that transfer rate to 7kW in the future.
