  • The average used car was listed for $26,342 in April, 3% more than a year ago.
  • Inventories are starting to recover from a low point in March, which should keep prices from soaring this summer.

Car dealers listed the average used car for $26,342 last month, 3% higher than a year ago, according to data from Kelley Blue Book parent Cox Automotive. Prices crossed the $26,000 line for the second time in 2026 – they started the year just above it.

Affordability has been a growing concern for drivers in 2026, with new car prices averaging nearly $50,000 and gas prices spiking.

But prices may remain reasonably flat this summer. America’s car dealers ended April with a 43-day supply of used cars on the lot, up from a near-record low of 37 at the end of March. Supply and demand govern car pricing, so a supply increase is good news for shoppers.

Price-conscious buyers continue to face limited options for affordable used vehicles. The top five sellers of the month had an average price of $24,511, approximately 7% below the average listing price for all used vehicles sold.

Once again, Ford, Chevrolet, Toyota, Honda, and Nissan were the top-selling brands, accounting for nearly 50% of all used vehicles sold.
