That code — 1LE — defines one of the most potent packages in the Camaro inventory, amplifying the track capabilities of Chevy’s bad boy pony car, dating to 1988 Sports Car Club of America racing. And for 2017, Chevrolet is expanding the reach of that designation to include Camaros propelled by six cylinders, Chevy’s 335-horsepower 3.6-liter V6, a 1LE first. The 1LE prime mover, of course, will continue to be based on the Camaro SS, with its 6.2-liter LT1 V8 hammering out a robust 455 horsepower. V6 or V8, the 1LE package is limited to 6-speed manual transmissions with short-throw shifters.
In addition to suspension upgrades, the latest 1LE kit include tweaks the design team say increase aerodynamic downforce, but without specifying just how much.
LT 1LE
Key performance package elements for the V6-version 1LE include: FE3 suspension components adapted from the Camaro SS; 20-inch forged aluminum alloy wheels wearing low-profile Goodyear Eagle F1 tires 245/40 front and 275/30 rear; Brembo brakes with 4-piston front calipers; a mechanical limited-slip 3.27:1 rear differential; track cooling package (engine oil, engine coolant, transmission oil and differential oil); dual mode exhaust system; the Camaro SS fuel system (for high g-loads); front end splitter and three-piece rear decklid spoiler.
In addition to the aero elements, the LT 1LE also sports a Satin Black finish on the hood, front splitter and rear spoiler. Interior enhancements include a suede-wrapped D-shaped sport steering wheel plus the availability of Recaro sport seats and a video/data recording system for track days.
SS 1 LE
The new 1LE package for the Camaro SS has several new features, including FE4 suspension — revised springs, anti-roll bars, and for the first time GM’s auto-damping Magnetic Ride Control. Other components include an electronic limited-slip 3.73:1 differential; Brembo brakes with racy red 6-piston monobloc calipers and 14.6-inch/2-piece rotors; 20-inch forged aluminum wheels with ultra-low profile Goodyear Eagle F1 tires (285/30 front, 305/20 rear); track cooling package; and dual mode exhaust.
Like the V6 version, the SS 1LE sports Satin Black on the hood and rear spoiler but features a Satin Graphite finish on its front splitter and rear diffuser – the latter item exclusive to the SS-spec car. Inner goodies include the suede wheel, Recaros and the data recorder.
Chevrolet won’t be ready to release 1LE pricing until the packages become available this fall.
