Alfa Romeo has recalled 53,849 Giulia sedans from model years 2017-2019 and Stelvio SUVs from model years 2018-2019 because their fuel pumps can fail, leading to engine stall.
The company tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that some parts of the cars’ fuel pumps can warp under exposure to the heat generated by a running engine. That can starve the engine of fuel.
The company knows of at least 437 customer complaints in North America, and five crashes, all in Europe, related to the problem.
Engineers are still working on a solution. Typically, when this sort of problem develops, an automaker replaces all or part of the fuel pump with a part of a different design. Procuring those for a design older than the current model year can take a few months.
When the remedy comes, it will be free. Manufacturers never charge for recall repairs.
