Acura followed up the reveal of its ZDX electric SUV with a surprise hint that could herald the return of a cult favorite car. Honda’s luxury division didn’t say the name “NSX.” But the words they did say suggest a new generation of the beloved supercar could be on the way.
The last NSX left the scene after the 2022 model year, bowing out with a run of just 350 high-performance Type S models.
This new model is likely just a concept car for now. The headline on Acura’s spare press release calls it the “Electric Vision Design Study.” But if it’s meant to preview a production car, they’d be insane not to call it the next-gen NSX.
“Our Acura design team in Los Angeles is dreaming up the future of Acura Precision Crafted Performance in the EV era,” said Dave Marek, Acura executive creative director. “This latest expression of an all-electric high-performance model is inspiring everyone in our studio to push the boundaries, and we wanted to share the fun.”
A few heavily-shadowed teaser photos show a car with proportions of out the Le Mans prototype racing classes. A bubble cockpit sits between tires in separate sculpted pods, making us wonder exactly how the doors open. Green lighting draws a Cheshire Cat grin up front and arcs over angular rear proportions that look alien – and unlikely to get through crash testing.
That may mean this is an early sketch of what to expect in the long run. The last time Acura brought out a new NSX, the company dribbled out years’ worth of hints and delays before showing a final production car.
