Volvo on Thursday unveiled the refreshed 2028 XC40 small SUV, sporting more streamlined ends, new light and wheel designs, and upgraded safety and infotainment technology. The powertrain and proportions remain the same.
The front end resembles the EX40 electric variant, which will not return to the U.S. for the 2028 model year. The LED headlights embrace a slimmer interpretation of Thor’s Hammer that hits every Volvo model, and it is bookended by new LED taillights that look like pinstripes. The restyled grille and front bumper appear lower and broader, and lack the recessed fog lights in the lower corners of the 2026 XC40.
Volvo will skip the 2027 model year for the XC40, instead running long on the 2026 model year before the 2028 goes on sale next year. Much of the changes happen under the skin, with the exception of new 18-, 19-, and 20-inch “diamond-cut” wheel designs.
Clever storage spaces such as a deep armrest console and a small trash pocket define the center console. Soft materials line the dash, which is trimmed with Scandinavian wood, and Volvo ditched the gloss-black plastic surfaces of its predecessor for less smudgy dark parts.
Slim vertical vents flank the dash, and a new, vertically oriented 11.2-inch touchscreen replaces the prior 9-inch unit. The Google built-in operating system uses Gemini for natural voice commands to input navigation, change the temperature, or serve up the best Swedish meatball recipe. The system has over-the-air updates for enhanced functionality over time. What it doesn’t have is wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; it’s there, but it’s wired.
Volvo upholds its safety pedigree with new software and upgraded cameras, radars, and sensors to help prevent or mitigate crashes. The brand’s Pilot Assist limited hands-free driving system now has lane change assist, and a surround-view camera is optional.
The 2028 XC40 will be offered in only one powertrain, the B5, which is a 247-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with a mild-hybrid starter and an 8-speed automatic transmission with all-wheel drive. The outgoing B4 with front-wheel drive will not be sold.
Pricing for the 2028 Volvo XC40 will be announced closer to launch. The current, 2026 XC40 B5 trim starts at $43,995.
