The Bus is back. After a one-year break, the Volkswagen ID. Buzz electric minivan returns with two new trims, a North American Charging Standard (NACS) adapter, and a few other minor upgrades, VW announced Thursday.
The 2027 ID. Buzz will be offered in two new trims, a Pro S 4Motion and a Tourer 4Motion. The two new trims should offer a more affordable entry point for the brand’s 4Motion system, which is a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup. Previously, 4Motion was limited to the top, most expensive trims. Bookending the new trims are the base Pro S with single-motor rear-wheel drive (RWD) and the top Pro S Plus 4Motion. The 1st Edition and Pro S Plus trims won’t be back.
VW ID. Buzz Tourer model
The new Tourer trim builds off the Pro S 4Motion and is intended for overnighters. It promises to make in-car camping easier with the following pieces:
Fold-out mattress and platform: The platform and mattress sit over the folded second and third rows of seats.
Window blinds: The magnetic window screens cover all windows, the windshield, and the panoramic glass roof.
Front window ventilation: These panels appear to insert in the front windows to let you crack the window for fresh air while blocking any bugs from coming in.
Overnight Mode: The software cycles on the air conditioning at night to maintain the temperature throughout the night as well as cycle in fresh air.
Optional equipment includes an exterior folding table and two chairs. VW says owners can stow the extra gear in a dedicated bag or box.
Additionally, the Tourer has a retractable tow hitch, second-row captain’s chairs, a dimmable glass roof, a surround-view camera, and rolls on black 20-inch wheels.
The Tourer is based on the “Good Night Package” sold in the European market, which costs about 3,000 euros, or $3,500.
Other updates to the 2027 ID. Buzz
For the first time, the ID. Buzz comes with a NACS adapter to enable DC-fast charging at Tesla Supercharger stations. Software upgrades promise a quicker navigation screen, more intuitive vehicle settings, and access to more apps. VW says the ID. Buzz will have one-pedal driving, as well, so regen braking can bring it to a full stop without the driver touching the friction brake.
A new Candy White over Cherry Red two-tone paint scheme with white wheels is a clear callout to the past. The ID. Buzz will only be sold in two-tone paint combos that combine the retro present with the venerated past of Volkswagen’s classic Microbus or Kombi, depending on the market and your sense of history.
Despite being a styling hit when the 2025 VW ID. Buzz launched new, a limited range of 234 miles and a starting price exceeding $60,000 capped the appeal of a reborn icon once known for its affordability.
VW tabled the Buzz for a year due to lower-than-expected sales, increased tariffs on imports, and the end of the $7,500 federal EV subsidy, which most versions of the original ID. Buzz didn’t qualify for. The company imports the ID. Buzz from Germany. Near the end of 2025, the ID. Buzz sat on U.S. dealer lots for nearly 150 days, which is more than double the target time to sell new cars.
The model went from having high markups to steep discounts, many outlets reported. It remains to be seen if VW will adjust its pricing scheme.
Pricing for the 2027 VW ID. Buzz should appear closer to its August on-sale date.
