Vans don’t get the level of attention that pickups do in the commercial world, but many are impressive workhorse vehicles with capabilities their truck counterparts can’t match. The Ram ProMaster City, last seen in 2022, is being resurrected to become the lone midsize commercial van in the United States. It is set to return for the 2027 model year in new form yet retain a reasonable price.
Ram will offer two trims: the base Tradesman and uplevel SLT. Both are available in cargo or passenger configurations that seat five or eight passengers. Interior cargo space reaches 167 cubic feet for 2027, with 48 inches between the rear wheel wells and a 111-inch-long load floor.
Despite its generous interior storage, the 2027 ProMaster City retains a tidy exterior footprint, measuring just 77 inches tall. That will make it much easier to park, especially in tight urban garage spaces, and it can still carry items up to 54 inches tall.
The van is rated to tow up to 2,000 pounds with the available Class 3 hitch and 2-inch receiver, and it can carry up to 2,000 pounds of payload. Those are stout numbers for a small van, especially considering its pint-sized powertrain.
Powertrain and Features
Ram will equip the van with a turbocharged 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine that makes166 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. It’s paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive, which, combined with a unibody design, should deliver confident maneuverability and a comfortable on-road driving experience.
Standard tech includes a 10-inch digital gauge cluster and a 10-inch touchscreen with navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The SLT trim adds a wireless phone charger.
The ProMaster City gains new advanced driver-assistance features for 2027, including rear parking sensors, hill-start assist, driver attention alerts, automatic headlights with LED daytime running lights, forward collision warnings, automatic emergency braking, and a digital camera rearview mirror system. Stepping up to the SLT trim brings front parking sensors.
Final pricing information will become available closer to the expected launch date in the first quarter of 2027, but it’s expected to be the most affordable commercial van when it arrives. Ram is targeting a sub-$40,000 price tag, though it’s important to note that upfits, options, and accessories could push that number skyward in a hurry.
