Honda is giving the 2027 Passport TrailSport a lift. The off-road version of the recently redesigned Passport midsize SUV gets a raised suspension with new parts to make it “the most off-road capable” SUV Honda has ever built, the brand said in a statement released Wednesday.
Honda claims its “engineers comprehensively redesigned the 2027 Passport TrailSport suspension system to ensure proper geometry for desirable handling and ride characteristics, while substantially improving capability.” This comes just one year after the Passport model itself was fully redesigned.
It has taller springs to boost ground clearance by 1.38 inches over the 2026 model, now reaching 9.65 inches on the 2027 Passport TrailSport. Honda redesigned the front driveshafts and front subframe, and revised the dampers, control arms, and stabilizer bars. In total, Honda says 28 suspension parts have been redesigned or are new to help boost its durability and improve its off-road ability.
Approach and departure angles increase to 25 degrees from 23 degrees, and the breakover angle increases to 23 degrees from 20 degrees. That should mean less scraping of the bumpers and underbody and more clearance to navigate rocky rutted paths or to ford deeper water crossings.
The TrailSport edition of the Passport has been Honda’s most successful application of its off-road line, accounting for more than 80% of sales of the Passport 5-seat SUV. The Honda CR-V and Honda Pilot also get the TrailSport treatment, but those models have at least seven trims to choose from, compared to essentially two core trims on the Passport: the RTL and the TrailSport.
Changes also include pronounced fender flares to flex all that mud in the wheel wells, and a revised lower front bumper to enable the improved approach angle. Amber lights in the hood scoop mimic big trucks, but in a count of two in the Passport instead of the federally regulated three amber lights on the roofs of large trucks. The hood scoop lights match the amber running lights stapling the sides of the TrailSport. Expect 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires to carry over, though Honda did not mention tires in the press release.
Additionally, all 2027 TrailSport grades now include a heated steering wheel and the 360-degree TrailWatch camera system.
The Honda Trail Experience (HTX) app introduced earlier this summer should have more data now that Honda owners have been using it. The free app connects the vehicle with GPS and shows data such as elevation, pitch, roll, tire angle, temps under the hood and beyond it, as well as latitude and longitude. It has a video capture feature that can be overlayed with map data so you can share routes or relive past glory.
Every Passport is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 making 285 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. A 10-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are standard. Towing capacity is 5,000 pounds.
Built in Alabama, the 2027 Honda Passport TrailSport goes on sale this month. Pricing is expected to be announced closer to launch. For an idea, the 2026 Honda Passport TrailSport starts at $50,145, including destination fee.
