If you’ve been looking for a sleek, drop-top muscle cruiser that also just so happens to pack nearly 800 horsepower under the hood, Ford has your new favorite answer: The 2027 Mustang Dark Horse SC Convertible.
More than a decade on from the last new high-performance convertible Mustang, the new Dark Horse SC Convertible takes the track-focused lessons learned in the coupe version and tones them down for more agreeable touring manners.
Not Trying to be a Racer
“Both the Dark Horse SC coupe and convertible have been developed by our Ford Racing engineers,” said Arie Groeneveld, chief engineer of the Mustang Dark Horse SC line. “But instead of prioritizing the convertible for setting lap times, we’ve engineered it to be the ultimate top-down grand touring machine.”
While some may quibble with the “ultimate” in that phrase (Aston Martins, Corvettes, Ferraris, and the like do exist, after all), none will quibble with the car’s prodigious output. The supercharged 5.2-liter V8 makes the same output as it does in its hardtop alter ego, 795 hp and 660 lb-ft of torque. A 7-speed dual-clutch transmission backs up the beefy V8.
Ford aims to keep the tires controlling all that power and torque firmly planted on the ground without rattling your teeth via its MagneRide suspension. Tuned specifically for the convertible, this high-tech damping system works in concert with the suspension and structure, including a magnesium tower brace, to seek the right balance of handling and comfort.
Fun & Sun & Expensive
Mark Rushbrook, Ford Racing’s global director, explains, “If the coupe is the race-bred side of our DNA, this convertible is the pure street cred part of the formula. It’s just pure fun, fast, freedom.”
Enhancing the fun, street-oriented angle, the new convertible will offer a new Precision Purple exterior paint, interior colors including Black Onyx and Space Gray, and a unique brake caliper color.
Ford hasn’t yet announced pricing for the Dark Horse SC Convertible, but other Mustang convertibles command a roughly $5,000 premium over their coupe counterparts. That potentially puts the Dark Horse SC Convertible near or even above the $110,000 mark given the coupe’s starting price of $108,085 including destination fee.
The Dark Horse SC Convertible will make its real-world debut this evening ahead of the Woodward Dream Cruise opening ceremonies. Orders will open this fall, with the first deliveries arriving at dealerships in the spring 2027.
