The Range Rover Velar is getting an update for the 2024 model year, with streamlined looks outside and a more minimalist cabin.
Subtle Changes To Look, Price Tag
The Velar has always been a Goldilocks vehicle that straddles two classes — bigger than compact but slightly smaller than most midsize SUVs. That won’t change. Prices stay as close to consistent as possible after recent inflation, too — the new starting sticker of $61,500 isn’t far from 2023’s price tag.
The Velar gets a new grille that mimics the wide-grid look of the 2023 Range Rover’s face. Updated daytime running lights are squarer than the current model’s, and the rear bumper has a slightly more sedate look.
But bigger changes come inside.
Beautiful Minimalism That Risks Being Frustrating To Live With
The current model is dominated by a busy center console with two screens. The 2024 edition gets a single, curved 11.4-inch screen mounted above a curved expanse of wood, lacking any visible buttons. It looks spa-like in its calming simplicity, but the lack of other controls means drivers will likely have to do everything through touchscreen menus.
Land Rover says a new version of its Pivi Pro software simplifies that process, but we’ll need to test it to be sure. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. The driver gets a digital screen instead of an instrument cluster, with a few steering wheel controls that seem to be the only buttons in sight.
Available cabin materials will include “a leather-free option.”
One Engine Option Disappears
Mechanically, the base model retains its 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine making 247 horsepower. A more powerful 3.0-liter turbocharged 6-cylinder model with mild-hybrid power returns, making 395 horses. A second 6-cylinder option used to sit between the two but has been dropped for 2024.
Overseas, Rover sells the Velar in a plug-in hybrid configuration. It won’t make it to the U.S. for 2024.
Both engines send their power to an all four wheels through a new 8-speed automatic transmission.
