That was quick. Just days after Toyota dropped teaser photos of an unnamed vehicle, and almost everyone immediately guessed its name, the company has confirmed: A new 2023 Toyota Sequoia full-size SUV will debut next week.
The current Sequoia has been on the road with occasional updates but no major overhaul since George W. Bush was president. The current 2022 Sequoia has a minimum sticker price of $50,500 and jumps to $69,775 for a well-equipped 4-wheel-drive Platinum model. Toyota also charges a $1,365 destination fee.
It’s as reliable as you’d expect from a Toyota, but lacks the refined ride and cabin technology of more recently-designed models like the 2022 Ford Expedition (our Best Buy among full-size SUVs).
But the Sequoia rides on the same platform as the Tundra full-size truck. There’s an all-new Tundra for 2022. So an all-new Sequoia is due.
We expect Toyota to replace its big V8 with a similarly-powerful but more efficient twin-turbo V6. The new Tundra also uses a more advanced suspension system that would be a natural fit for a family hauler.
A new Sequoia has several shoes to fill. Toyota pulled its long-successful off-road-oriented Land Cruiser full-size SUV from the U.S. market this year, leaving the Sequoia as the only big ‘ute on Toyota sales lots. A second teaser photo Toyota released today shows vaguely Land Cruiser-like taillights, so Toyota may position it as a natural heir to that vehicle, too.
Land Cruiser enthusiasts, though, should know that the next-generation Land Cruiser does appear on the American market. It’s just not wearing a Toyota badge. The all-new Lexus LX 600 shares most of its equipment with the Toyota model of the same name that’s available in other parts of the world.
As for the 2023 Sequoia, we’ll bring more details next Tuesday.
