2022 Subaru WRX Starts Under $30,000

Subaru’s high-performance, rally-ready compact sedan has a niche all to itself. So perhaps it’s not surprising that Subaru has raised prices after a recent redesign. The 2022 Subaru WRX will start at $29,105, plus a $995 shipping and handling fee.

That’s an increase of about $1,600 over last year’s WRX. But the new car is more capable.

It rides on an all-new chassis that’s 28% stiffer than the one it replaces, with an all-new suspension featuring a rear stabilizer bolted directly to the chassis for more stability in hard cornering. Its 2.4-liter turbocharged flat 4-cylinder engine makes 271 horsepower. Power goes through a 6-speed manual or a new continuously variable automatic transmission designed to feel like an 8-speed automatic.

Big fender bulges give the new car a widebody look, even if its dimensions remain close to those of the car it replaces. Black plastic body cladding around the wheel wells shows its off-pavement intentions.

The 2022 WRX will come in base, mid-level Premium, or a more upscale Limited trim. A top-of-the-line GT model offers Recaro racing seats, customizable driving modes, and adaptive shocks. But it is offered only with the CVT.

The WRX is unique in the marketplace. Drivers looking for a performance-oriented small car might also consider the Honda Civic Type R and Hyundai Elantra N. But both are built for the pavement, so neither can go where the WRX can go.
