The 2022 Nissan Rogue, complete with its new heart, starts at $26,700, plus a $1,175 destination fee.
All-New Last Year
The Rogue was redesigned entirely for the 2021 model year. The new model was an upgrade in every way – sharp new styling, improved automated safety systems, a quieter cabin, and a more responsive all-wheel-drive system that earned plaudits from reviewers.
The upgraded Rogue experienced a few growing pains – most notably a poor frontal crash test score, after which Nissan improved its seatbelt design and retrofitted the Rogues it had already sold with the upgraded restraints. But it quickly earned a strong reputation. It currently sits near the top of our list of the Best Compact SUVs.
Reviewers had just one consistent complaint – the 2021 Rogue’s 2.4-liter 4-cylinder powerplant was just enough to move it through traffic effectively but felt overmatched by many competitors.
One Less Cylinder, More Power
It turns out the engine was effectively a placeholder. For 2022, Nissan has replaced it with a mill that is smaller, more powerful, and more fuel-efficient.
The new engine is a turbocharged 1.5-liter 3-cylinder model. It cranks out 201 horsepower (20 more than the old model) and 225 pound-feet of torque (a boost of 44). Despite the power increase, the engine uses less fuel. The 2022 Rogue will return 33 mpg in combined driving. That’s a boost of 3 mpg over the older, weaker engine. It’s also a better score than the segment-leading Toyota RAV4 can manage.
Power goes through a redesigned continuously variable transmission (CVT). The new model is designed to provide more instant power at low speeds.
