Infiniti has dropped the curtain to show off its all-new 2022 QX60 3-row SUV. The midsize luxury SUV market is crowded with impressive vehicles that make it hard for a new entrant to stand out. But the restyled Infiniti has handsome bodywork and one of the best-looking new interiors we’ve seen this year.
Infiniti hasn’t announced pricing, but we expect it to hew closely to the 2021 model’s $44,350 starting point. The new 2022 QX60 will go on sale in the fall.
V6 Only, Improved Gearbox
Though the 2022 QX60 is a new design, it uses the same engine as the outgoing model. That’s not a bad thing – the 3.5-liter V6 has always been smooth and responsive. It still puts out 295 horsepower – enough to easily close holes in traffic and tow up to 6,000 pounds.
In the prior model, Infiniti paired it with a continuously variable transmission. That’s something we rarely see in the luxury classes, and Infiniti has done away with it. The new QX60 uses a 9-speed automatic more in line with what class leaders like the Audi Q7 and Acura MDX have to offer. Front- and all-wheel-drive models are available.
Big Exterior Changes
The bodywork has been upgraded considerably. Sharply angled LED headlights give the big SUV a grimace and sit above huge vertical air intakes. They surround a big chainlink grille.
Heavily sculpted rear doors take what could be a boring wagon profile and make it muscular. Glossy black pillars make the roof appear to float. Top-of-the-line Autograph editions have the option of a contrast-color roof.
Bigger Interior Changes
But it’s inside where the QX60 really shines. The dashboard has been sculpted to emphasize the driving position. A new 12.3-inch infotainment display sits above touch-sensitive buttons with haptic feedback.
In a touch that parents will celebrate, the second-row seats slide all the way forward and tilt at the touch of a button to give access to the third row, but do it without disturbing a child-safety seat. Most QX60s will ship with a second-row bench seat, but the Autograph edition is available with captain’s chairs and a removable center console.
And speaking of the Autograph edition… it is gorgeous. Quilted semi-aniline leather covers the seats, the door panels, and even the dash. That’s a look we’re accustomed to seeing at the six-figure price level, so it’s remarkable to see it in an SUV that may cost half that much.
Forward-collision warning, automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and rear automated emergency braking are standard. Nissan’s ProPilot adaptive cruise control tech is an option. It can recognize traffic signs and adjust speed accordingly.
