The 2022 Honda Civic hatchback has sportier looks and more cargo room than the excellent Civic sedan it’s based on. It’s also available with a stick shift not offered on the sedan. But it will cost you a bit more.
Our test drivers found the Civic sedan to be both fun to drive and more upscale than many competitors in the compact car market. The hatchback shares most of its parts but offers more cargo room and almost-European styling.
Manual Transmission Available on Some Trims
The 2022 Civic hatchback goes on sale today, with a starting price of $22,900 plus a $1,015 destination charge. That price gets you the base LX model and runs $1,220 more than the sedan’s LX.
The LX, however, is available only with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Drivers looking for the three-pedal experience will need to step up to the Sport model, which carries a sticker price of $24,100 with either the stick or the CVT. Both trims come equipped with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine making 158 horsepower.
A more powerful turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder making 180 horsepower is standard on the EX-L for $26,600. It comes mated to the CVT. It adds leather upholstery, an 8-way power driver’s seat, heated front seats, heated outside mirrors, a one-touch power sliding moonroof, and dual-zone automatic climate control.
Shoppers looking to combine the stick with the quickest engine have only one option. The top-of-the-line Sport Touring edition starts at $29,400 with either transmission. It adds luxury touches like a Bose premium audio system, a new 9-inch color touchscreen display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a power-adjustable passenger seat.
Limited Competition
Compact hatchbacks aren’t as common as they used to be. The 2022 Toyota Corolla hatchback has a lower starting price than the Civic and also offers a manual option, but its styling limits cargo room. The Mazda3 hatchback is also offered with a stick, but only with its pricier Premium package.
There are still more Civic variants to come. Honda says the car “is the second in a series of new 11th generation Civic variants that also will include the high-performance Si and Civic Type R models.”
