The GMC Terrain compact SUV receives a significant makeover for 2022, debuting a more rugged look and a new off-road-oriented trim.
Pricing has not been announced, but we expect to see a slight increase from current prices. The 2021 Terrain starts at $26,195, topping out at $36,995 for the top-of-the-line Denali trim (plus a $1,195 destination charge). The 2022 Terrain goes on sale in summer, with the Denali trim to follow in early fall.
New Grille, AT4 Trim
On the outside, the Terrain gets a larger grille (a common theme in almost all 2022 redesigns we’ve seen so far), larger headlights, reshaped taillights, and LED lighting all around. The new AT4 trim, built around an off-road theme, gets its own gunmetal gray grille, a front skid plate, and wider tires. The Denali has a unique chrome grille. While the look hasn’t changed much, GMC’s Terrain retains its distinctive place in the compact SUV market — this is the one to get if a handsome, rugged appearance is your thing.
Inside, the design has changed little. Our testers weren’t fond of the push-button shifter in the last Terrain, but it’s still here, with redesigned buttons. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, both standard, are now wireless. The vehicle can now integrate Amazon’s Alexa to accept some voice commands. Denali and AT4 trims have a head-up display for the driver.
Driver Assists Now Standard
A suite of driver assists, known as GMC Pro Safety, is now standard equipment. They include automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist with an audible departure warning, forward collision alert, and front pedestrian braking. Also standard is GM’s IntelliBeam system, which automatically switches between low and high beams depending on conditions.
There are no mechanical changes so far – the same 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine making 170 horsepower and a 9-speed automatic transmission is the only choice. But rumors suggest that the 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine from the Cadillac XT4 will be available several months after the 2022 Terrain debuts. It produces 237 horsepower in the Caddy, though we’d expect it to be retuned for the heavier Terrain.
