Acura has unveiled the 2022 edition of its flagship SUV, a ground-up redesign that may move it out of the middle of a crowded pack. The 2020 Acura MDX sits in a three-way tie at number 11 in our list of the best midsize luxury SUVs. The new model will offer more space, more power, updated cabin tech, and a bold new style.
The proportions look dynamic, with wheels pushed closer to the corners, and a longer hood that makes the larger grille seem more rakish than comical. Slim lights complete the upscale look.
Power comes from a 297-horsepower 3.5-liter V6, with a new 10-speed automatic transmission. A quicker option is available – the sportier S version carries a 355-horsepower turbocharged V6. An available all-wheel drive system uses torque vectoring to improve handling.
The hybrid model, however, has been dropped from the lineup. Acura says there are currently no plans to offer one.
The most dramatic changes come inside, where all three rows of seating and the cargo area all grow, though the Audi Q7 and BMW X5 still offer more overall space. Choices include brushed aluminum or open-pore wood trim, and a new ambient lighting system offers 27 different settings. We like this feature that lets owners change the feel of their cabin on the fly.
The 2022 MDX starst at $47,925 and runs to $61,675 for the top-of-the-line Advance model. Pricing for the S has not been revealed.
