Citing a decision to focus on greater volume products, Land Rover said it has cancelled production of the super-exclusive 2019 Range Rover SV Coupe, a $295,000 2-door 4-passenger SUV limited to just 999 units worldwide. The Jaguar Land Rover Group has been struggling lately with Bloomberg reporting that the company recently took a $4 billion write-down and faces a slowing market in China and uncertainty over its prospects under Brexit.
The Range Rover SV Coupe debuted at last year’s Geneva Motor Show and the company had taken orders for the handbuilt luxury flagship. It had expected to begin deliveries late last year. But according to a company statement, “We have taken the difficult decision to inform our customers that the Range Rover SV coupe will not proceed into production. Instead, Land Rover is focusing its resources and investment on the next generation of world-class products."
Exclusive features
The SV Coupe recalled the iconic looks of the original Range Rover, which also bowed as a 2-door back in 1970. Unlike that more utilitarian version, the latest edition, which was to be assembled by the company’s Special Vehicle Operations in Warwickshire, England, featured bespoke interior fittings including custom leather, wood and trim accents, exclusive exterior paint treatments and a floating roof design with panoramic glass greenhouse.
The 2019 Range Rover SV Coupe also promised high performance from its 557-horsepower supercharged 5.0-liter V8 pumping out 516 lb-ft of torque. Land Rover said the SV Coupe is capable of 0-60 mph acceleration in 5 seconds and has a top speed of 165 mph. Sadly, the only Range Rover SV Coupe to see light of day will be on the Geneva show property.
A Land Rover spokesman said the firm remains committed to "exciting plans for electrification, enhanced craftsmanship, innovation and technology…Our Special Vehicle Operations division is continuing to develop exciting cars that push the boundaries of luxury, performance and capability [such as] the Range Rover Velar SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition and the all-new Jaguar F-PACE SVR. We have many more new models in development."
