Lexus has taken the wraps off its latest crossover SUV, the 2019 Lexus UX, a subcompact entry positioned below the NX in the luxury division’s line. The UX is making its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show, some 18 months after its appearance as a concept at the Paris salon.
Based on the same platform as the Toyota C-HR, the 2019 Lexus UX has an edgy design that incorporates the division’s prominent spindle grille theme. Lexus says the underpinnings give the vehicle “exceptional body rigidity and a low center of gravity for exceptional handling.”
Urban explorer
“The first-ever Lexus UX is designed for the modern urban explorer seeking a fresh, contemporary and dynamic take on luxury driving,” said Chika Kako, chief engineer of the UX. “We designed the UX to appeal to buyers in their 30s who seek not only what is new and exciting, but what is also relevant to their lifestyles.”
The 2019 Lexus UX will be offered in two models, the UX 200, powered by a new 168-horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine mated to a CVT and the UX 250h, which is rated at 176-horsepower total output from a hybrid powertrain that incorporates the same 2.0-liter engine. The UX 250h also benefits from a second electric motor on the rear axle giving it all-wheel drive capability.

Inside, the cabin has a cockpit design focused on the driver, leaving the passenger space wide and open. Lexus calls it a “seat-in-control” concept puts all key vehicle functions within easy reach of the driver. Using traditional Japanese crafts as an inspiration for the interior design, the UX will be available with an optional quilted leather interior and new trim finishes, one that mimics the grain of Japanese paper.
F Sport option
The 2019 Lexus UX will also be offered with the division’s F Sport option package that features a performance-oriented suspension with specific spring, stabilizer bar and shock tuning to sharpen the vehicle’s handling. The F Sport option can be combined with an Adaptive Variable Suspension system, which also helps minimize body roll.
The F Sport package includes a mesh texture to the spindle grille, large fog light bezels with L-shaped chrome molding, a distinctive rear bumper treatment, 18-inch alloy wheels and black trim. Inside, the F Sport will have sport seats, a unique steering wheel, 8-inch TFT color display for the driver and aluminum sport pedals and foot rest.
U.S. customers will get their first in-person look at the vehicle during the New York Auto Show in April. The 2019 Lexus UX 200 and 250h start production this fall for December availability with pricing announced closer to the on-sale date.
