Getting ready to make its grand entrance sometime next year, the 2018 Porsche Cayenne gets a much needed makeover that gives it a sleeker appearance thanks to a flatter roof and reshaped body panels. The German automaker’s flagship SUV benefits from the all-new Volkswagen Group MLB platform which underpins the 2017 Audi Q7 and 2017 Bentley Bentayga. That architecture will also be used on the upcoming Volkswagen Touareg as well as on a new SUV from Lamborghini.
The all-new MLB structure employs a liberal use of aluminum and lightweight high-strength steel to create a stiffer core will less mass. Reports put the weight savings in excess of 200 pounds, which is significant, especially in a vehicle that tips the scales at well over 4,000 pounds.
New-gen turbocharged V6 and V8 engines
While there’s no final word yet on powertrains, we fully expect to see the new Cayenne offer the same all-new twin-turbo V6 and V8 engines introduced in the 2017 Porsche Panamera turn up underhood here as well with a plug-in hybrid and even a full EV variant also rumored.
Perhaps the biggest change beyond the evolutionary sleeker exterior will be in the cabin where the center console, which in the current model is chock full of buttons and switches, will be cleaned up considerably thanks to a larger center touch screen and fewer controls overall. The 2018 Porsche Cayenne is expected to bow sometime next year, possibly as early as next March’s Geneva Auto Show.
