While we’re still waiting on a number of specific details regarding the revised 2018 Ford Mustang, we now know the automaker has decided to equalize the tire-smoking fun factor across the entire family. Ford confirmed the electronic line-lock feature previously exclusive to the V8-powered GT will now be standard on Mustangs with the 2.3-liter EcoBoost 4-cylinder engine as well.

Traditionally used by drag racers, the system locks the front brakes and allows the rear tires to spin and build grip-enhancing heat for stronger, more consistent launches. Accessed via a menu on the instrument cluster and activated by steering-wheel-mounted thumb switches, the system can lock the front brakes by up to 15 seconds to facilitate a safe burnout — albeit one Ford notes should only be done when the car is at a racetrack.
The line-lock setup will come on EcoBoost Mustangs fitted with either the standard 6-speed manual or optional 10-speed automatic transmission. Buyers opting for the 12-inch all-digital instrument display will be treated to a graphic presentation of line-lock at work in the form of an animated video that shows a spinning wheel churning out a cloud of tire smoke when the system is engaged.

“We introduced line-lock on EcoBoost Mustangs because we didn’t want those customers to miss out,” said Mark Schaller, Ford Mustang marketing manager. “The number of people choosing EcoBoost power continues to grow globally, and with the increased torque and new features coming on the new Mustang, customers will not be disappointed.”
