Following on its introduction of turbo power to the standard rear-drive variants of the 2017 Porsche 911, the German sports car maker used the Tokyo Motor Show to launch the turbo versions of the car in all-wheel form. Now all 911 models will use turbocharging to boost performance and fuel economy.
Available in coupe and convertible body styles, the new 911 Carrera 4 adds a turbocharged 3.4-liter flat six engines to the range. There are two states of tune, the standard engine, which produces 370 horsepower and the more potent S model, which makes 420 horsepower in the Carrera 4S.
A 20-horsepower bump
The increase in horsepower, which is 20 over both standard and S models, gives additional muscle to the all-wheel drive Carrera thanks to the use of twin turbos on the smaller displacement engine, which will in turn contribute to better fuel economy in normal driving.
The new Carrera4 all-wheel drive system incorporates enhancements from the range topping Porsche Turbo employing electro-hydraulic control that allows the suspension to reach faster and more sensitively to driving conditions. The suspension has also been recalibrated to have a slightly lower ride height and revamped suspension setting to improve both handling and ride.
Buyers can also opt for an extra-cost active rear-wheel steering which further sharpens vehicle handling. The new all-wheel drive 2017 Porsche Carrera 4 is slated to go on sale sometime next year in the U.S.
