Mazda confirmed that the all-new 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata will be revealed on September 4th at special events in Japan, Spain and the U.S. In addition to showing off the fourth-generation MX-5, all three venues also will host follow-up festivities intended to thank loyal owners who have firmly established the Miata as the world’s most popular two-seater with sales of about 945,000 units to date.

"We’re excited to make this official, to announce that the newest member of the MX-5 Miata family will be arriving soon," said Jim O’Sullivan, president and CEO, Mazda North American Operations (MNAO).  "Along with our colleagues around the world, we continue to celebrate the MX-5’s 25th anniversary and look forward to sharing even more news in the near future."

While Mazda offered no new facts about the Gen IV Miata’s mechanical makeup, we already have some idea of what to expect when the 2016 MX-5 does roll onto the scene. The automaker displayed the car’s all-new chassis and powertrain – the first time its SkyActiv technology is being applied to a front-engine/rear-drive platform — at the New York Auto Show in April. The new MX-5 will feature an all-new aluminum-intensive chassis that’s notably stiffer and stronger than ever before. Combined with even lighter-weight suspension components, this new configuration is expected to help trim about 220 pounds off of the 2016 car’s curb weight. Electric-assist power steering and revised geometry promise to further improve the MX-5’s already legendary handling and its new SkyActiv 4-cylinder naturally aspirated engines will be set back further and positioned even closer to the ground to help the vehicle’s balance as well as lower its center of gravity.

Here in the U.S., the 2016 Mazda MX-5 reveal will take place at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, California as the kickoff event to a 3-day celebration. Those follow-up activities will include parade laps around the legendary Laguna Seca circuit, an attempt at a Guinness World Record for the largest Miata gathering, displays of various historic MX-5s and more — including a series of SCCA-sanctioned Miata sprint races.
