Making its first public appearance in U.S., the 2016 Kia Rio shows  more style and user friendly character in its Chicago debut. Both the Rio Sedan and 5-door Hatch that bowed in Euro-guise last fall at the Paris show were on hand at the reveal. Each version of Kia‘s entry-level subcompact sports its own revised nose and tail treatment for 2016 that center on a new grille insert that aligns with the pattern on the Soul and Optima. The front revamp also has a bolder lower valance panel as well as repositioned/restyled fog lamps and bezels while a similar subtle tweaking is reprised in the rear fascia.

Again offered in LX, EX and SX trims – now with new Urban Blue and Digital Yellow exterior colors — both Rio variants carry over the existing 138-horsepower/1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine. However, while the Sedan still offers a 6-speed manual transmission or optional 6-speed automatic that also brings Kia’s Active Eco System and Bluetooth connectivity the 5-door becomes auto-only for 2016. Inside, all Rio models benefit from additional sound deadening in the A- and B-pillars as well as more premium "touch points," while the EX offers a new two-tone Designer Package that matches black cloth and gray leatherette trim while bolstering the existing Eco Package with an updated UVO eServices Telematics that includes an integrated backup camera. The range-topping SX also steps up its game by moving leather seating, a newly upgraded navigation system with SiriusXM Traffic, Smart Key with pushbutton start and a power sunroof from optional to standard-issue goodies.

The 2016 Kia Rio Sedan and Rio 5-door Hatchback are scheduled to hit showrooms here later this quarter. Pricing will be announced closer to the official on-sale date.
