Barely a month after Chevy rolled out the 6th generation of its classic pony car, the automaker took the wraps off of the 2016 Camaro convertible. While this stylish droptop is a mechanical clone of the coupe and benefits from the same stiffer structure and roughly 200-pound weight reduction, it does boast one key difference in the form of what Chevy is calling "the most sophisticated top in the segment."

Electro-hydraulically actuated, the flippable lid on the new Camaro convertible is indeed a tasty bit of work. It swings into action at the touch of a button inside the cabin or on the key fob, is fully lined with both acoustic and thermal sub-layers and can be deployed in either direction at speeds of up to 30 mph. Mimicking the line of the Camaro coupe’s roof when up, it also tucks away neatly below the car’s beltline under a hard tonneau cover when folded.

Two trim levels

Available in SS and LT models when it goes on sale in early 2016, the new Camaro convertible will be offered with the same all-new powertrain combinations as its coupe counterpart: a 275-horsepower/2.0L Turbo 4-cylinder, an all-new 355-horse/3.6-liter naturally aspirated V6 and the 455-horse/6.2-liter LT1 V8, each of which can be backed by a 6-speed manual transmission or optional 8-speed autoshifter.

With respect to its sportiness, Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer promises this latest member of the family won’t disappoint.  "From the beginning, the Camaro’s architecture was developed to incorporate a convertible with uncompromised driving dynamics. Customers will appreciate what they don’t feel: quivers, cowl shake or an under-damped chassis typically found in a four-seat convertible."

As with the Camaro coupe, pricing for the 2016 Chevy Camaro convertible won’t be released until closer to its arrival in showrooms.
